Our first drive in the 2024 Ford Explorer left us thoroughly impressed, particularly with its spacious interior and smart storage.
As a family SUV, the Ford Explorer excels in practicality. The cabin is spacious, with ample legroom in the rear seats, although taller passengers might find the headroom slightly less generous, there is still plenty of room to manoeuvre. Despite having no front boot (unless we missed this? We couldn’t find a way to open one!) the 470-litre boot has plenty of space for most needs, with additional underfloor storage and easily foldable rear seats that enhance its cargo-carrying capabilities.
Ford has also introduced clever storage solutions in the cabin. The ‘locker’ behind the tilting touchscreen is a neat touch, providing a hidden compartment that’s perfect for storing valuables. The central console is another highlight, offering deep storage that can accommodate a laptop or a small handbag, along with removable cupholders and a phone tray.

Motors, Performance, and Handling
The 2024 Ford Explorer continues to uphold Ford’s reputation for delivering a quality handling experience. The Explorer seems to do well in straight-line speed but also impresses with its handling ability, it’s very responsive as you would expect from a Ford. Even on challenging roads, the Explorer’s steering is precise, making it genuinely enjoyable to drive.
Ford has utilised Volkswagen’s MEB platform to craft a vehicle that still feels very much like a Ford – that’s clear in the suspension that provides a comfortable ride.
The regenerative braking system is controlled via a gear selector on the steering column. While the standard mode is quite subtle, the ‘B’ mode offers enough braking force for one-pedal driving, ideal for city driving.
Battery, Range, and Charging
The Ford Explorer offers three battery options to cater to different driving needs. The single-motor 77kWh Extended Range RWD model, expected to be the most popular, boasts an impressive range of up to 374 miles. The more powerful 79kWh AWD variant delivers a slightly shorter range of 329 miles, while the entry-level 52kWh model, arriving later in the year, offers a respectable 239 miles.
Charging capabilities are robust across the lineup. The 77kWh and 79kWh models support up to 185kW DC rapid charging, allowing a 10-80% charge in just 26 minutes, which is close to the best in class. The 52kWh version charges at a peak rate of 135kW, achieving the same charge level in about 30 minutes. At home, a 7kW charger will fully recharge the 52kWh battery in under nine hours, while the larger batteries require around 13 hours.
The Explorer uses standard Type 2 and CCS sockets, ensuring compatibility with the vast majority of public chargers across the UK and Europe, making long-distance travel straightforward and hassle-free.
We drove our Explorer in the city and out into the countryside for about 90 minutes, the battery capacity went from 51% down to 46% upon return of the car. This seems reasonable and in line with what you would expect from a new EV with a battery in good condition.
Interior Design, Technology, and Features
The interior of the 2024 Ford Explorer represents a significant step up in quality compared to previous models. The materials used feel premium, and the overall design is modern and functional. The Premium trim level enhances the experience with features like a panoramic glass roof and a Bang and Olufsen sound system that delivers exceptional audio quality.
One of the standout features is the 14.6-inch tilting touchscreen, which, while innovative, has some usability quirks. The touch-sensitive steering wheel controls can be overly sensitive, and the small, fiddly shortcut icons on the screen can be frustrating to use on the move. However, the system does offer a degree of customisation, and with time, users can adapt it to their preferences.
Running Costs and Pricing
The 2024 Ford Explorer starts at around £46,000. While this pricing positions the Explorer towards the higher end of the market, it offers competitive value when considering its equipment levels and performance.
Additionally, the Explorer’s battery warranty covers eight years or 100,000 miles, this is in line with the best battery warranties offered by other brands.
However, the Explorer compensates with a wealth of standard features, including 12-way electric seat adjustment with a massage function, heated seats, keyless entry, a reversing camera, parking sensors, and semi-autonomous adaptive cruise control. The Premium trim adds even more luxury, making the Explorer a well-equipped and attractive option for families.
